This quest is made more difficult by the fact that the symptoms of MS vary widely from one person to the next, and a treatment that is effective for one person may have no effect on another.

According to the NY Times, the medical establishment has failed to solve the mystery of multiple sclerosis. For that reason, MS patients are often open to diverse therapeutic approaches, and one approach that appears to hold great promise is upper cervical chiropractic care. In order to fully understand how this chiropractic approach is helpful, it is first necessary to have an overview of multiple sclerosis.

Overview of MS

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and unpredictable disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerves in the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. This in turn causes irreversible damage to the axons, which transmit nerve impulses from the brain to the rest of the body. Because nerves lead from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body, damage to these nerves can show up in countless forms.

The first symptoms of MS are usually noticeable between the ages of 20 and 40, although it is postulated that the disease actually exists in the body long before it makes itself evident. The cause of MS is not known, but environmental factors are considered likely to be involved.

A Breakthrough Approach

Because multiple sclerosis affects and is affected by the upper cervical conmplex it can be helped by chiropractic care. In 2011 Dr. Scott Rosa demonstrated an Upper Cervical chiropractic technique, which realigns the upper cervical complex can improve blood and spinal fluid to flow normally again. When function and flow is normalized the body can have great benefits.

When the upper cervical complex is not moving correctly biomechanically, the cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF) cannot flow normally out of the ventricles of the brain and down the spinal column. Multiple sclerosis is often characterized by myelin sheath deterioration or dysfunction. If we can return normal flow and function to these areas there may be great relief to the patient.  For Example In Dr. Rosa’s research case. the patient suffered from vertigo and would vomit when she would lie down. A revolutionary use of upright MRI was able to locate the misaligned cervical vertebrae, and once these were properly aligned, the subject in this research felt a great relief of her symptoms. Research indicates that the techniques pioneered by Dr. Rosa will provide valuable relief of MS symptoms for a large percentage of patients.

Around 60 percent of our bodies are made up of water and even our bones are at least 22 percent water. Adequate water is absolutely essential to staying healthy and fighting off disease. Most healthy adults need about 60-80 ounces of water every day to be adequately hydrated. That is just a general number though and it should be adjusted if you are a youth, senior, or have a medical condition.

Water plays two key roles in your maintaining health: hydration (all cells need water to survive and perform vital life functions) and detoxification.

Hydration

The majority of people do not get enough water in their daily routine or diet. To make matters worse, many people habitually consume dehydrating agents like energy drinks, sodas, alcohol and coffee/tea. Another culprit is eating a diet that is not readily bioavailable for digestion (processed meats, foods, GMOs, alternative sugars, Transfats, etc) The body has to work harder to digest this food, which utilizes more water and water by products, increasing the amount of dehydrated cells with in the body.  Thirst is frequently mistakenly interpreted as hunger, leading to obesity. diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.  In fact some of the things that are good or even great for us are dehydrating. Exercise, massage, chiropractic and rest all can change the flow of blood thus requiring more water for proper hydration.

Detoxification

Toxins accumulate in fatty tissues, especially the liver and kidneys. Plenty of water is needed to flood and flush these tissues.  Once toxins are emulsified, water then helps transport the toxins through the body AND if properly hydrated they should flush right out of the body versus being taken back up by fatty tissues.  Both cold and hot water have their place in a regular detoxification plan. Drinking cold water enters the blood stream more quickly and forces the body to burn calories to warm the water up to body temperature. Hot water can activate our sweat glands, which is our main channel of natural detoxification.

How do I add distance before the season? This is the number one question I get asked at the clinic in regards to golf.. My questions back are à how bad do you want it? and are you willing to work for it? You can read endless books, watch endless videos, buy new clubs, buy new balls, even buy a workout plan but if it not personally tailored to you and your work efforts it just will not work!!!

So for those of us who are going to work a little harder to get healthier, stronger, and improve our golf game please read on!

You MUST create POWER.

P: Positives and negatives: You must strength train concentrically and eccentrically. This means control your movements on both the push and return. If possible create a forced negative environment for your muscles. This requires help from a trained professional.

O: Optimism: These few months of work may hurt, may not give the results asap but they will show up if you are consistent for 90 plus days.

W: Water: Water is key for recovery, competition and let us not forget all bodily functions.

E: Enthusiasm and Energy: The positive frame of mind must include picking yourself up when you are down, eating right, and doing the perfect workout for YOU to up your energy.

R: Recover: You are going to want to push but take at least a one day rest every week and a recovery week once every four to five weeks. The recovery week is not a do nothing week. It is a light conditioning and heavy on the flexibility week.
